Serial Numbers

9N, 2N, and 8N Ford tractors: produced from 1939 to 1952

The serial number is located on the mid-left side of the engine block on an approximately 1/2'x 3' vertical flat. The serial number is hand-stamped onto the vertical flat, not cast into the engine block. Format is model designation before sequential production number. Serial numbers for the 9N and 2N Ford begin with the designation '9N.' Serial numbers for the 8N Ford begin with the designation '8N.'

Golden Jubilee and NAA Ford tractors: produced from 1953 to 1954

On early production models, before serial number NAA-22239, the serial number is located on the left front corner of the engine block, just below the manifold. On models serial number NAA-22239 and beyond the serial number is located on the left side of the transmission housing, above and to the rear of the starter, just below a 3'x 6' horizontal flat on a 3/8'x 3' semi-vertical surface. The serial number is hand-stamped onto the semi-vertical flat, not cast into the transmission housing. Format is model designation (i.e. 'NAA' or 'NAB') before sequential production number.

Hundred Series Ford tractors: produced from 1955 to 1962

The serial number is located on the left side of the transmission housing, above and to the rear of the starter, on a 3'x 6' horizontal flat. The serial number is hand-stamped onto the horizontal flat, not cast into the transmission housing. Format is model designation above or below sequential production number.

Hundred series Ford tractors were produced from 1955 to 1958. Workmaster and Powermaster Ford tractors were produced from 1958 to 1962. The numerical designations 501, 600, 601, 700, 701, 800, 801, 900, and 901 represent the series designation. The serial number reflects the model designation and sequential production number, e.g. a 641 Ford tractor is series 601, model 641.

Thousand Series Ford tractors: produced from 1962 to 1964

The serial number is located on the left side of the transmission housing, above and to the rear of the starter or directly below the starter, on a 3'x 6' horizontal flat. The serial number is hand-stamped onto the horizontal flat, not cast into the transmission housing. Format is model designation above or below sequential production number.

The numerical designations 2000, 4000, 6000, etc. represent the series designation. The serial number reflects the model designation and sequential production number.

Additional designations for Ford tractors produced from 1939 to1962

· A 'star' before and/or after the serial number indicates hardened steel cylinder sleeves. Hardened steel cylinder sleeves were used in production up to tractor serial number 8N-433578.

· A 'diamond' before and/or after the serial number indicates cast-iron cylinder sleeves, which are .098' larger in bore.

· Suffix-AN (e.g. '8NAN'); distillate model, 1939-1952.

· Suffix-B (e.g. 'NAB'); distillate model, 1953-1954.

· Suffix-L (e.g. '640L'); LP-gas model, 1955-1962.

· Suffix-D (e.g. '851D'); diesel model, 1958-1962.

· Ford tractors have no separate engine serial number. Engine type may be determined by the casting code found on the right side of the engine. The casting code is cast into the engine block rather than hand stamped like the serial number. Casting code EAE signifies the 134 cubic inch Red Tiger OHV engine found on the Golden Jubilee/NAA, 600, 700, 501, 601, 701 and early, four cylinder 2000 series Ford tractors. Casting code EAF signifies the 172 cubic inch Red Tiger OHV engine found on the 800, 900, 801, 901, and early, four cylinder 4000 series Ford tractors.

Undocumented Designation

Documentation published by the (former) Ford Tractor and Implement Division provides no information on the model designation '-5.' Information provided to The Vintage Ford Tractor Resource by owners of Ford tractors with the model designation “-5” suggests that the designation '-5' describes a row crop tractor equipped with a “wide front” dealer-installed option. The “wide front” dealer-installed option should not be confused with the “high crop” aftermarket accessory, which was not available through Ford Tractor and Implement.

Additional Information: 'Hundred Series' and 'Thousand Series' Ford Tractors

The model number consists of three digits, followed in some cases by a suffix consisting of a number and/or letter. The first digit designates the engine size and tractor type. The second digit designates the transmission type and the third digit designates the production year range of the series.

The numerical designations 501, 600, 601, 700, 701, 800, 801, 900, and 901, represent the series designation. Hundred Series Ford tractors (series 600, 800, 900, etc.) were produced from 1955 to 1958. Workmaster and Powermaster Series Ford tractors (series 601, 801, 901, etc.) were produced from 1958 to 1962. The serial number reflects the series, model designation, and sequential production number, e.g. the 641 Ford tractor is series 601, model 641.

Ernie This info you provided has helped me also. I have a 1821 industrial backhoe/loader 4 cyl, gas tractor 4x4. I can't seem to find anything about it in any of the forums. It must be a very trouble free unit or the only one around.
